The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.
– Dennis Waitley
I had a discussion with a group of elementary school kids this morning and we were talking about being responsible and this was how the conversation went:
Me: What’s up? Are you in a bad mood this morning?
Kid 1: No.
Kid 2: (sibling) He’s just lazy.
Kid 1: No, I’m not. I have a job in my class.
Me: Really? That’s awesome. What is your job?
Kid 1: Clerical Assistant.
Me: Wow! That’s so cool. So what does a clerical assistant do?
Kid 1: I move things around the class.
Me: Now, that’s responsibility right there. Good for you!
Me: (talking to Kid 2) So, do you have a class job too?
Kid 2: No, not yet (says quietly).
[End of conversation]
I must commend teachers for the hard work they do in teaching our kids and giving them responsibilities in class. As parents, we have to do the same and make sure our kids know what it means to be responsible. They say charity begins at home. Good job teachers. We thank you!
